FAQ

Q. Why is everything pointless?
A. Because there is no god and one day you, and everything else will be gone.

Let me explain:

The Big Bang:
Okay well the Big Bang happened over 13 billion years ago. That's how long it's been since it all started. And it did start, very very small. It very quickly expanded and over the billions of years has carried on expanding and aging, so it looks the way that it does today. No intelligence was behind it.

The Beginning of Life:
Life began when molecules started to replicate. This was not a conscious process but a consequence of some chemical molecules replicating and some not. There was no intelligence behind it. Natural selection drove the process, so that better replicators were more successful. That's evolution.

Personal Death:
Easy one. One day you will die. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and forever!

Death of the Universe:
One day in the future, you and every single thing will be gone. The Earth, the Moon, the Sun, the galaxy and finally the entire universe. Along with your descendants and any trace of you.

Conclusion:
When your short existence is over, you will have been given by chance, the pleasure of experiencing something rare, on this planet and perhaps in the universe - conscious experience and the ability to choose. After you die, you will cease to exist. One day in the future, everything will cease to exist.

Since nobody created the universe for us. Since it does not matter if any of us live or die (there is no grand scheme of things). Since everything that we do in our lives, will one day be wiped from existence, so that nobody knew that we had even existed, doesn't that change the way we should live our lives, today?

Forget what you've been taught. Darwin's work is not even two centuries old. That's only a few generations that have even had the chance to understand evolution.

And now you know.

Q. Okay. Shouldn't I just kill myself now?
A. Why? Most of the human race has lived and died not knowing the truth about their existence. Calm down. There is nothing special about this point in time. The cave-man, ancient Egyptian and Victorian gentleman, all thought they were special when they were alive. But now they are dead and it doesn't really matter what they did during their lives.

Don't be disturbed by this knowledge. Asking to find any meaning in a universe with no creator is like asking a tree why it's growing, or a volcano why it's erupting? Pointless.

You exist. Get over it. Get on with living. Be happy.
