Mother Convicted of Killing Children

Since the post on the gagged babies provoked a bit of discussion, I thought I'd post this story. The BBC reports that a woman has today been convicted for nine years, for killing four children in a car accident, whilst under the influence of drugs. An extract:

Davina Smith not only caused the death of two of her daughters but also killed two teenage family friends when she crashed a stolen car after taking drugs.

But to compound matters she then gave police a written statement in which she sought to blame the entire incident on one of the dead children.

So two 16 year olds, and two children under 10 died so this woman could get high and drive. Not only did this woman kill her own children, but she also killed two children that were not related to her. Her drug addiction presumably precipitated the accident, but drugs are already illegal and that didn't stop this woman procuring them and killing the kids.

What to do with people like this is one of those near impossible problems that society faces. There is no guarantee that if she hadn't had children, that she wouldn't have still killed the ones that weren't hers anyway. All in all a sad story.
